Alpha Olefin Sulphonate (AOS)

Exporter & supplier, HSN 340239, Surfactants

Alpha olefin sulphonate (AOS) is an anionic surfactant made from C14–16 alpha olefins. It foams well in hard water, stays stable across a wide pH range and biodegrades readily, making it a common sulphate-free alternative to SLES and SLS.

Also known as: AOS, Sodium C14-16 olefin sulphonate, Sodium C14-16 olefin sulfonate, Sodium alpha olefin sulfonate, Olefin sulphonate

Handling, storage and hazards

Handling and storage

  • Store liquid AOS between about 5 °C and 40 °C in closed containers; it is more cold-stable than SLES 70% paste.
  • Store powder dry and minimise dust when handling.
  • Use clean equipment; solutions should be preserved against microbial growth once opened.
  • Wear eye protection and gloves during handling.

Hazards

  • Causes serious eye damage, both as powder and in typical 35–40% solutions.
  • Causes skin irritation.
  • Harmful to aquatic life before dilution.

Questions about Alpha Olefin Sulphonate (AOS)

Is AOS a sulphate-free surfactant?

Yes. AOS is a sulphonate, not a sulphate, so it is widely used in products labelled sulphate-free.

How does AOS compare with SLES?

AOS gives quick, abundant foam and tolerates hard water better, but it thickens less readily with salt. Many formulas combine the two or add a co-surfactant such as cocamidopropyl betaine.

Why is AOS used in foamed concrete?

Because it produces fine, stable bubbles that survive mixing with cement, giving lightweight concrete and gypsum products a uniform cell structure.

What HSN code does AOS use?

Alpha olefin sulphonate falls under HSN 340239, other anionic organic surface-active agents.

Is an SDS available for AOS?

Yes, an SDS is available on request.

Do you export Alpha Olefin Sulphonate (AOS)?

Yes. Goodbiz Chem exports and supplies Alpha Olefin Sulphonate (AOS) (HSN 340239). Send a quote request with quantity, packaging and destination port; SDS available on request.
